ourBournemouth is an online application built on the Ruby on Rails framework that enables any constituent to ‘Suggest an idea for your council’. With the main aim of giving local people a chance to let their voice be heard by others around them as well as their elected representatives. This aim, based as it is upon a true model of participatory democracy, entitles large numbers of people to have their say and directly influence the elected.

A resident is able to access the website, and either submit an idea for the Bournemouth council in general, or for their specific ward, by entering their postcode. Ideas can be as broad as increasing police funding, to as in-depth as re-vamping their local park at the end of their road. Other constituents within the ward, can then view these ideas, and either promote (vote for) or demote (vote against). Creating a localised overview of concerns and issues within a ward, visible to both residents and councilors. All users are allowed to comment and discuss upon submitted ideas. This encourages active discussion between local residents; aids towards the strengthening of ideas and lets users reach a common goal together.
